General Breathalyzer Questions

How accurate are the breathalyzers sold by Xunga.com?

With the exception of the Key Chain Breathalyzer, very accurate. The Key
Chain Breathalyzer is a novelty-grade unit and provides an approximate range
of the subject's blood alcohol content. The AlcoHAWK ABI and AlcoHAWK Pro use advanced
semiconductor sensors and have an accuracy level of ±0.01% at 0.10% BAC.
The AlcoHAWK ABI, AlcoHAWK Pro, AlcoHAWK Precision, AlcoHAWK Slim and AlcoHAWK Elite all provide an exact blood
alcohol level (BAC) reading to one hundredth of one percent. Some law enforcement
organizations actually use the AlcoHAWK Pro testers as preliminary
alcohol screening devices.

How do I use my breath alcohol tester?

For most models, users simply blow through the mouthpiece for 2-4 seconds.
The sensors measure the alcohol level of air in the deep lungs. Testing is most
accurate if subjects have not consumed food or alcohol 15 minutes prior to testing.

Why do I need a breath alcohol tester? Aren't they just for police?

Alcohol breath testers (i.e. breathalyzers) are a great tool for everyone.
People are often unaware of their precise intoxication level. Different factors
like a person's weight, muscle mass, and recently consumed food or beverages
all affect a person's blood alcohol content (BAC). Just because a person may
act or seem sober does not mean that they are.

I've just blown a 0.08% BAC. It's safe for me to drive home, right?

Absolutely not. There is no acceptable level of alcohol consumption that
makes it safe to drive. Any alcohol that enters a person's body can impair reflexes,
motor skills and cognitive abilities.

Does my personal alcohol tester come with a warranty?

Yes, all of our products are covered by the manufacturers' warranties.
Please refer to the product order pages for additional information.

Calibration

What is calibration?

Calibration is checking and adjusting the accuracy of a unit by comparing
its results with a known value. For example, a known 0.080 %BAC gas concentration
is blown into a breathalyzer, and the unit is adjusted to make sure it correctly
reads 0.080 %BAC. It is important to calibrate breath alcohol testers periodically
to maintain accuracy.

Which breathalyzers sold by Xunga.com can be calibrated?

The following breathalyzers can be calibrated:

  • Alcohawk ABI
  • Alcohawk Pro: Professional Edition
  • Alcohawk Precision
  • Alcohawk Slim
  • Alcohawk Elite
  • Bactrack

Does my order come "pre-calibrated"?

All breathalyzers sold by Xunga.com are factory calibrated and ready to
use upon receipt. (This is sometimes referred to as "pre-calibrated.")
We work closely with several manufacturing facilities to ensure accurate results
for all models.

How do I know when my tester requires calibration?

Xunga.com recommends that the AlcoHAWK Series testers are calibrated at
least once every 12 months to maintain accurate results.

Depending on usage, units may require more frequent calibration service. For
example, subjects should always wait at least 15 minutes after eating or drinking
before blowing into the tester. If a subject blows too soon after eating or
drinking, this can damage the sensor and/or require an immediate recalibration.

Many professional customers have access to calibration systems and are able
to verify accuracy throughout a unit's lifetime.

How do I get my breathalyzer calibrated?

Xunga.com offers a professional calibration service. To get your breathalyzer recalibrated,
please click on the appropriate calibration order form:
